I adore those cute little moon phase wall hangings, and I want one now. I already have everything I need at home, including a pile of cardboard boxes, so we’re making one. Yes, this wall hanging is made from a cardboard box. What can I say? I’m frugal. Below are the supplies, my moon phase template, and the actual process, including the part where cutting cardboard crescents tests my will to live.
Supplies:
First, grab the moon phase template below. I make mine in Paint. If you’re printing it, open Print Preview, go to Page Setup, and change “Fit to” to 2 by 2 pages. Tape the printed pieces together, then trace the shapes onto your cardboard. You can also trace the template from your screen if you don’t want to print it. Now cut out the moons. This sounds simple. The crescents have other plans.
An hour later and 3 different scissors I finally said... Fuck this! This shit is dumb, I'm buying one from ETSY! This is where the mug (or jug!) of wine comes in handy. Actually you want to start on your wine before you start so when you get to this point you won't give a mother fuckface about how stupid hard it is to cut crescents out of cardboard!!!! Okay, whew. I feel better. Now if you did not give up then you have all your pieces cut out! If you survive cutting the cardboard, lay out your moon pieces and grab your paint. I leave out the extra small circle from my template because I don’t use it in the finished hanging. I have brown acrylic paint on hand, but apparently not a single paintbrush. I do have a shit ton of makeup brushes, and they work just as well. Paint your moon pieces and let them dry. You are now an artist. Enjoy some adult snacks while you wait because adulting is hard. Then hurry and put the paint away before the children see it. I really wanted you to see my pathetic little hot glue gun! That is paper stuck to it, and it doesn't even work all of the time. I have to shove things in the end to get the glue to come out! It's really sad. Take your dowel or stick and tie twine around the ends so you can hang it. Nothing fancy to see here! Hot glue another length of twine to the center of the dowel. Arrange your moon pieces in order, then glue each one to the hanging twine. I added a wooden bead at the bottom, but that part is completely optional. Hang it up and enjoy your cardboard masterpiece. I love how this turns out, but cutting cardboard crescents is a pain in the ass. One of my sons wants one, so next time I’m trying foam sheets. If you’ve made a moon phase hanging, tell me what you use in the comments. I’m open to anything that involves fewer scissors and less swearing at cardboard. If you make one from my template, I’d love to see it. And if this saves an Amazon box from the trash, even better. Thank you for looking at my shitty photos, they aren't going to get any better either!

Love this! Thank you. I really want one for my daughter, I can’t find any that I like on Etsy or eBay or elsewhere so started the search in how to make and came across your page. Great tutorial haha love it, so realistic!! I think I’m going to try this with air dry clay and then I’ll paint it. Wish me luck :)
