Fondant Loop Bow

I've recently started to dabble in cake decorating and I must say I have fallen head over heels in LOVE with it! Who doesn't love cake, and a fabulously decorated cake, and... CAKE?!!

I've always had a soft spot for frosting! Give me a chocolate cake with buttercream frosting and I am in hog heaven! The richer the buttercream the better! Nom nom nom... I actually prefer the frosting over the cake. Given my passion for this perfect food, it seemed only natural that I take a cake decorating class and learn how to make pretty cakes.

I am making my first baby shower cake and I wanted a pretty loop bow for the top. The bow pictured here is my practice bow. I'll do the real thing in a few weeks. This was my third attempt with the bow and I think I finally got it right. I was rolling my fondant out too thin and the loops kept breaking. I found that you want the fondant to be about 1/8-1/4 inch thick. I found instructions for the bow at Adventures in Savings. They give a very detailed explanation and pictures that are very helpful! I found with the 2 inch ball that you wet and put in the middle of the bow needs to be worked until it feels like a marshmallow. I let my loops dry for about 3 days and once I put them in the "wet ball" teehee I placed the completed bow in a noodle strainer to dry completely. I am using marshmallow fondant and I have found it needs about 48 hours to dry completely. So this is my first successful fondant loop bow and I am very pleased with it! You can dust it with pearl dust or luster dust to give your bow extra oomph! I will post my finished cake with the real fondant loop bow topper when they are done!
